website changes

I’ve decided it’s time to build a new website. I haven’t been entirely sure which direction to go, but I officially reached bloggers limits while attempting to make some changes, so it’s time.

I’ve had a few ideas about new websites, but I’m still undecided on how to put it all together. Multiple websites vs. one website with multiple information, sailing blog by itself vs. incorporated into another website, personal blog incorporated into sailing blog or separated? etc… It used to be easier, but now I want to monetize as much as possible (without being invasive), and it makes sense to make multiple websites. Problem with that is it’s 10x more work than maintaining a single website.. I also want to explore writing a little more but I don’t want to ‘test’ things on my sailing blog. I removed a few posts from here because they aren’t sailing/boat related. I’ll repost them when I figure this stuff out.

I know I should be writing more about “my life afloat”, but I’m basically in the doldrums right now and there’s really nothing interesting enough to write about that has any connection to sailing or boats. Meanwhile, I have an incredible amount of new ideas about life, death, politics and religion, but I don’t think they are appropriate for a sailing blog. So I feel the need to separate that stuff. Ultimately, I want mylifeafloat.com to be a sort of travel log with lots of videos, that’s been the idea all along. But since I’m not travelling yet and it might take another year or more, I still need an outlet to explore writing and all my other thoughts. I would just start another blog, but since blogger is shitting on me right now, I might as well take the time for a complete transformation and build something a little more sustainable and harmonious. The internet is changing constantly, and so are my ideas, I need a platform that can keep up.

I’m starting from scratch, so it could take a while, but I’ll continue to update you guys here.

I kept a written journal from 2005 to 2006 while I was in Iraq. When Ilook back on my writings now, I wish I would have kept into account more of my travels there and daily living accounts… like what I did during that day, boring or otherwise. Maybe try and think of it as Lewis and Clark's memoirs? You're a captain…. you should keep a regular log right? justa thought. I enjoy your writings, sailing related or not.

  2. If you want to go with wordpress, I can host it on my server for free. Stay away from joomla, and drupal.

Yeah I'm goin with wordpress for the blog, but i was thinking of using joomla for another site, is something wrong with it? I'll email you about hosting whenever i get to that point. where/what kind of server do you have?

PS: Lyle, thanks for the encouragement and I apologize for not responding sooner. I've never been very good at keeping a daily journal type of thing, and I don't keep a ships log. I plan to log data for passages and extended trips, but for regular boating I don't see any reason for it. If I was a licensed captain it would be necessary for legal reasons in case you ever get into trouble or something. But as a recreational boater, all that log stuff is a bit over hyped.

I'm really not much of a writer, despite what a few people keep telling me. But, I really want to share my travels and thoughts with people because I know how difficult it is to find honesty and realistic interpretations on the internet. Not to mention this sailing lifestyle, and even the mundane liveaboard life, is pretty amazing and I think the more people understand it the more they will look at their own lives a little differently….

Anyway, I'm working on it, don't let my slow periods convince you otherwise. My intentions haven't changed a bit
